ABOUT ME

I live in Cedar City, UT and spend most days fishing and then build rods at night. While I specialize in light fly rods for trout I also build lots of  heavy saltwater fly rods as well as technique specific casting rods, boat rods and spinning rods. If you are ever in Southwest Utah look me up and I'll be glad to take you fishing (I'm not a guide but I know where the fish are).

If you are thinking about moving to southern Utah check out www.ourutahhome.com for some great rent to own real property.

Some of my favorite places to fish are the Sevier River, Mammoth Creek, Paragonah Reservoir, Quail Creek Reservoir, Newcastle Reservoir, Beaver River, Beaver Mountain Lakes and my absolute favorite place to fish is Kolob Reservoir just outside of Zion National Park.

Kolob is managed as a trophy lake where the limit is 1 fish that must be 22" to keep. a typical day will be a couple of trout big enough to keep and 1-2 dozen that aren't big enough. I have caught as many as 10 fish over 16" per hour and like all waters I have been skunked. While I like to do this with a 4 weight fly rod or when the wind kicks up use a 5' ultralite for most people I would recommend a 5-6 weight fly rod or a med-light to medium power spinning rod with a moderate fast to fast action and 6 lb test. I would never use a casting rod to throw the tiny lures that I use for trout.

Do you like BASS? If you like fishin' for smallies I've got 'em at Newcastle about a half hour to the west. I've seen smallmouth bass over 19" get pulled out just fishing from the shore! Most of the bass seem to be 8-14" but there are some monsters there. I have had more than a few hooks straightened by the fish there and pick up peoples broken rods almost every time out. Newcastle also has trout. Last summer someone pulled one out that weighed in at 13 lbs.

Down at Quail Creek Reservoir we have Largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, trout and catfish swimming around in crystal clear water. 5 lb bucket mouths are a common site at Quail lake and as long as you're in a float tube the 100+ degree weather won't bother you. Quail lake also has bluegill that are the size of a dinner plate and catfish up o about 10 lbs.

The newest reservoir and state park in Utah is Sand Hollow. With clear warm water and plenty of cover this has the potential to be one of the best bass fisheries in the state. As of the summer of 2004 16-18" largemouth were common. Since they have to be under 10" or over 20" to keep them these fish should be easily over 20" by the summer of 2005.
