CHOOSING THE ROGHT POWER (LINE WEIGHT)POWER - This is the lifting or pulling power of the rod. With fly rods this is determined by line weight. Typical trout rods are anywhere from 3-6 weight rods. 5 weight rods are most common. With most manufacturers this means that they are designed to hold 30 feet of the designated line. If you are distance casting you will probably want a stiffer rod. Something that works extremely well is going down 1 or 2 line weights. Also remember that a lighter line will hit the water more softly being less likely to spook fish. Many experienced anglers will put 4 weight line on a 5 weight very fast action rod so that they spook the fish less and still have pleanty on backbone to land them. There are 2 typical ways to choose the weight rod you want. The first is by fly size and the second is by fish species. Fish species is a better way to choose. BY HOOK SIZE: This chart has the typical hooks used with each line range. | | Trout | Panfish | Bass | Saltwater |
